Introduction of PSTD

It is a mental health condition that people have after experienced some traumatic events. Now the question is what is a traumatic event? Any situation that captivates either the serious injury, actual demise of someone, sexual abuse, or any other kind of violence. The traumatic events last for a very long time after they appeared. A traumatic event could be any event that upset or shocked a person to the extent that their daily life functioning gets disturbed. Some of the traumatic events are discussed below:

  1. Experiencing any terrorist attack.
  2. Any serious motor vehicle accident.
  3. Sexual abuse
  4. Domestic violence
  5. Chronic illness
  6. Being in a warzone area
  7. Sudden death of the loved one

The Response After Trauma

According to the experts, there are three ways that adults can possibly respond after experiencing some traumatic event.

  1. Some people are very strong headed and they know how to come back after a major negative event hit. It can be said that they are very good at resilience and don’t show any symptoms. Yet it doesn’t include the people with abuse including physical and sexual.
  2. Most people experience the PSTD symptoms for a week but after that, they start healing naturally. This method is very usual among those who sexually suffered sexual abuse.
  3. But then there comes the third category of people whose symptoms do not go on their own and they developed the disorder shortly. These people have bad resilience capabilities.

The Risk Factors

There are following risk factors that involve

Before experiencing trauma:

  1. If the person is already sensitive the trauma hits hard.
  2. If there is any history of some prior traumatic event.
  3. Any history of the disorder in the family.

During trauma:

  1. Encountered with that undesirable or distressful event while dealing with one trauma already.
  2. Having thoughts of death.
  3. Met with some severe accident
  4. Disconnection from others during the phase of trauma

After trauma:

  1. Problem gets severe when a person didn’t get the acquired amount of social support from the family or peers.
  2. Dealing with one problem at one time makes life less stressful but already suffering from a mental condition and facing other stressors too contribute to the severity of the disorder.
  3. Avoidance is always not so very effective strategy to deal with any mental health problem. Avoiding the symptoms and not seeking help worsen the problem.
